Camila arrived at Pergamino, in El Poblado, ten minutes before Felipe.

It was Saturday morning, and the café was full.

Felipe le había escrito un minuto antes.

Felipe had texted her a minute earlier.

“Ya casi llego. Tengo una sorpresa.”

“I’m almost there. I have a surprise.”

Camila sonrió.

Camila smiled.

They had been together for four months, and Felipe loved surprises.

She ordered an orange juice and found a table near the plants.

Two minutes later, a waiter placed the glass in front of her.

He also left a small black box next to the glass.

Camila dejó de sonreír.

Camila stopped smiling.

Miró la caja.

She looked at the box.

Después miró la puerta.

Then she looked at the door.

Felipe todavía no estaba allí.

Felipe still wasn’t there.

Abrió la caja lentamente.

She slowly opened the box.

Había un anillo dentro.

There was a ring inside.

Camila sintió calor en la cara.

Camila felt her face get hot.

No quería casarse.

She didn’t want to get married.

No ahora.

Not now.

Y definitivamente no después de solo cuatro meses.

And definitely not after only four months.

Su celular vibró.

Her phone vibrated.

“Entrando.”

“Coming in.”

Camila cerró la caja.

Camila closed the box.

Tenía que hablar con Felipe.

She had to talk to Felipe.

A few seconds later, he appeared with a big smile.

—¡Hola!

“Hi!”

Camila se puso de pie.

Camila stood up.

—Felipe, tenemos que hablar.

“Felipe, we need to talk.”

La sonrisa de Felipe cambió.

Felipe’s smile changed.

—Bueno…

“Okay…”

—Me gustas mucho.

“I really like you.”

—Eso no suena bien.

“That doesn’t sound good.”

—Pero no puedo casarme contigo.

“But I can’t marry you.”

Felipe la miró sin entender.

Felipe looked at her, confused.

—¿Casarte conmigo?

“Marry me?”

Camila señaló la caja negra.

Camila pointed at the black box.

—Encontré el anillo.

“I found the ring.”

Felipe abrió la caja.

Felipe opened the box.

Sus ojos se hicieron grandes.

His eyes grew wide.

—Camila, este anillo no es mío.

“Camila, this ring isn’t mine.”

Ahora fue ella quien no habló.

Now she was the one who said nothing.

—¿Entonces cuál era tu sorpresa?

“Then what was your surprise?”

Felipe sacó dos entradas de su bolsillo.

Felipe pulled two tickets out of his pocket.

—Conseguí entradas para el concierto del viernes.

“I got tickets for the concert on Friday.”

Camila miró las entradas.

Camila looked at the tickets.

Después miró el anillo.

Then she looked at the ring.

—Ah.

“Oh.”

Felipe empezó a reírse.

Felipe started laughing.

“You thought I was going to ask you to marry me after four months?”

—¡Dijiste que tenías una sorpresa!

“You said you had a surprise!”

Before he could answer, a man came running over to the table.

Parecía muy nervioso.

He looked very nervous.

—Perdón —dijo—. ¿Tienen una caja negra?

“Excuse me,” he said. “Do you have a black box?”

Camila levantó la caja.

Camila held up the box.

—¿Esta?

“This one?”

—¡Sí!

“Yes!”

El hombre miró hacia otra mesa.

The man looked toward another table.

Una mujer estaba caminando hacia el baño.

A woman was walking toward the bathroom.

—Voy a pedirle matrimonio —explicó—.

“I’m going to ask her to marry me,” he explained. “The waiter left the ring at the wrong table.”

Camila le dio la caja.

Camila gave him the box.

—Problema resuelto.

“Problem solved.”

El hombre negó con la cabeza.

The man shook his head.

—¡No!

“No! She’s already coming back. If she sees me with the box, the surprise is ruined.”

Camila miró hacia el baño.

Camila looked toward the bathroom.

La mujer ya venía de regreso.

The woman was already on her way back.

—Dámela —dijo Camila.

“Give it to me,” Camila said.

El hombre le devolvió la caja.

The man handed the box back to her.

Camila hid it behind her glass of juice.

El hombre regresó rápidamente a su mesa.

The man quickly returned to his table.

Su novia llegó unos segundos después.

His girlfriend arrived a few seconds later.

Camila y Felipe intentaron actuar con normalidad.

Camila and Felipe tried to act normal.

But the man couldn’t stop looking at the box.

Dos minutos después, la mujer se levantó.

Two minutes later, the woman stood up.

—Voy por unas servilletas —dijo.

“I’m going to get some napkins,” she said.

Camila, Felipe y el hombre se miraron.

Camila, Felipe, and the man looked at one another.

Era el momento.

This was their chance.

Camila grabbed the box and gave it to Felipe.

—Llévasela.

“Take it to him.”

—¿Yo?

“Me?”

—¡Rápido!

“Quick!”

Felipe miró al hombre.

Felipe looked at the man.

Estaba demasiado lejos.

He was too far away.

La mujer ya estaba regresando.

The woman was already coming back.

—No alcanzo —dijo Felipe.

“I can’t make it,” Felipe said.

—¡Haz algo!

“Do something!”

Felipe tomó la caja.

Felipe took the box.

Y la lanzó.

And threw it.

—¡Felipe!

“Felipe!”

La caja voló por el aire.

The box flew through the air.

Golpeó el respaldo de una silla.

It hit the back of a chair.

Rebotó sobre una mesa.

It bounced across a table.

And landed directly in the man’s hands.

Los tres se quedaron inmóviles.

All three of them froze.

El hombre miró la caja.

The man looked at the box.

Después miró a Felipe.

Then he looked at Felipe.

Felipe levantó los pulgares.

Felipe gave him two thumbs up.

En ese momento, la mujer regresó.

At that moment, the woman returned.

—¿Qué pasa?

“What’s going on?”

The man didn’t have time to hide the box.

So he did the only thing he could do.

Se arrodilló.

He got down on one knee.

Abrió la caja.

He opened the box.

La mujer se tapó la boca.

The woman covered her mouth.

—¿Te quieres casar conmigo?

“Will you marry me?”

Hubo un segundo de silencio.

There was one second of silence.

Después ella gritó:

Then she shouted:

—¡Sí!

“Yes!”

Todo el café empezó a aplaudir.

The whole café started applauding.

Felipe miró a Camila.

Felipe looked at Camila.

—Exactamente como lo planeamos.

“Exactly how we planned it.”

Camila empezó a reírse.

Camila started laughing.

Before leaving, the woman stopped by Camila and Felipe’s table.

—Gracias por ayudar —dijo.

“Thanks for helping,” she said.

Después los miró a los dos.

Then she looked at both of them.

—¿Y ustedes cuándo?

“And when are you two getting married?”

Camila y Felipe se miraron.

Camila and Felipe looked at each other.

Y se echaron a reír.

And burst out laughing.
